Cabinet Overlays
Cabinet door overlay options determine how the door fits over the cabinet frame. Each style provides a distinct appearance and functionality, enabling you to to select the best fit for your design vision and overall space aesthetic. There are three primary overlay styles to consider. The difference is truly in the details when you create your space!
Partial Overlay
A 1/2 overlay on cabinet face frames is a partial overlay style where the doors cover most of the frame but leave a half-inch reveal (gap) between them when closed. This design strikes a balance between the modern look of full overlay cabinets and the timeless elegance of inset cabinetry.
A 1/4-inch overlay on cabinet face frames is a partial overlay style where the doors cover most of the frame while leaving a 1/4-inch reveal (gap) between them when closed. This design offers a blend of full and standard overlay styles, providing a contemporary look while keeping some of the cabinet frame visible. It's a popular choice for those who want a modern touch with a hint of traditional character.
As less material is being used, this is the least expensive overlay cabinet option.
Full Overlay
The full overlay cabinet doors completely cover the cabinet frame, delivering a sleek and modern aesthetic. This style creates a seamless, uniform look with minimal gaps between doors. When two cabinets are placed together, a 3/8-inch space remains between the doors.
European-style full overlay cabinets offer a sleek, modern design by covering more of the face frame, leaving only a minimal 1/16-inch reveal. When two cabinets are placed together, there is just a 1/8-inch gap between the doors.
This style creates a clean, streamlined look, making it an ideal choice for contemporary and European-inspired interiors. Less expensive than inset cabinetry.
Inset
Inset overlay cabinets have doors that sit perfectly flush within the cabinet frame, creating a seamless and sophisticated look. This style showcases precise craftsmanship, offering a refined and tailored appearance similar to fine furniture. However, it requires exact measurements and specialized hinges for proper alignment and functionality.
These cabinet doors slightly reduce and limits interior storage space and require hardware for easy opening and closing. Typically a more expensive choice.
